Christmas is coming! We are past Black Friday now so can legitimately get excited, get the decs up and enjoy mulled wine next to a roaring fire. And for me, part of the excitement of Christmas is getting some crafting on and making some thoughtful, unique Christmas gifts. My Christmas cross –stitch is coming along well, although really I should probably have started months ago…Continue reading
Sometimes, this whole “being a parent” thing hits you, and it’s usually at times you wouldn’t expect. My latest wave of realisation came one evening last week. I was chilling on the couch, Little Mister sat on my knee, watching a re-run of Dance Moms, whilst he was munching away on some blueberry tapioca crackers (as an aside, although the packaging says “mess free”, I have a purple crusted pair of joggers that would beg to differ). I couldn’t stop watching him, feeding him-self, when it only felt such a short time ago we were decorating the nursery and picking out bottles. And he looked so content, cracker in hand, smiling away at Abby Lee Miller whilst she passive aggressively crushed the dreams of some child. Then he blew a raspberry with a mouthful of cracker everywhere and kind of bust me out of the moment. I think it’s the finger foods that are making it hit home, that Little Mister is starting those first steps to feeding independence in what feels like no time at all.Continue reading
It’s been over 4 months since little mister has arrived (somehow!). This leads me to something I’ve been dreading, something that I’ve been putting off for a few months now… the post-pregnancy diet. I’ve never been one to stick to a diet; the initial enthusiasm quickly wanes once my wine and chocolate have been taken away and end in a mega-binge that usually leaves me bigger and less athletic than before. Past exercise regimes have suffered a similar fate, with couch to 5k ending after 4 weeks because “it looked a bit rainy out”, badminton ending as “we’d be better off investing in equipment to work out from home” and the exercise bike at home ending as it had too many coats hanging off it. My weight has always yo-yo’d, but in recent years has been much harder to lose. Having hit my pre-pregnancy weight months ago to then gain even more weight since, I felt compelled to make the change. This time I have a very good incentive to get fitter (my little mister, and my future wedding), and maternity leave is a great time to form these new habits, away from the allure of office cakes and vending machines.
It’s been a busy weekend this one, and since Little Mister’s arrival it just feels like we’ve been going non-stop. Early on Saturday we viewed a wedding venue that we both loved (not sure if bubba liked it, he waited an hour before crying to leave), then in the afternoon we went to a lovely birthday party. Sunday we popped to Mothercare to spend our voucher, and was very fortuitous with the sales (next year’s summer clothes are sorted! 3 pairs of shorts for £6, £2 t-shirts. So many bargains!). We also picked up a reduced Lamaze highchair toy; as Lamaze have recently unveiled a new logo I had a hunch all of their toys would be coming down in price. Afterwards, we went to the most magical place on earth… Toys R Us! In these times of Amazon Prime next day delivery, I just couldn’t justify picking anything up there and then. The only toy related thing on my radar to still get is a Vtech baby walker, but they were a full £6 cheaper online. I did come away with a Mario Lunchbox for myself, and a new found appreciation of how many toys there are in the Toot Toot range.
Little Mister is still teething, bless his heart. In between bouts of being smiley, we have long periods of just screaming. He’s even screaming in his sleep now, which is a little disconcerting as he doesn’t wake up. We ventured out into town for a little fresh air, which meant harnessing him into the buggy. Funny thing, every time I put my son into his pushchair, this is the face that greets me:
We’ve all been there; you’re having people around in a few hours, the house is a tip… and you have no snacks in at all! Or, even worse, you’re not having people around, the baby has just stopped crying after an epic 2 hour meltdown and you’ve already eat all of the emergency biscuits to have with your pick me up coffee! You need a recipe that’s easy to execute, and fast. Have no fear, one bowl peanut butter cookies are here for you! No Mixers involved; just bang it all into a bowl, stir it together, and fling it in the oven. I can’t remember my source for this recipe, so I can only apologise. This is one of those that I had written down years ago in my notebook and paraphrased in shorthand. If you do recognise the recipe please let me know so I can give full credit!!
